Where to start
Hiring for supply chain assurance?
Hiring for supplier assurance or third-party risk?
Hiring for GRC, audit or consulting?
Hiring in defence or aerospace?
Snapshot
Eighteen years operating inside mandated assurance frameworks and high-consequence logistics environments, moving into civilian supply chain assurance and operational controls roles, with third-party risk and GRC as adjacent routes. The question has stayed the same in every uniform: does the record match the reality, and how would you know if it stopped? I design controls, investigate discrepancies, and give decision-makers confidence that records reflect reality.
As Tier 1 signatory on my account's supersession certificate, the person formally accountable for certifying stock and inventory records at handover, I sit inside a four-tier structure mapping directly onto the Three Lines Model: my own first-line ownership, second-line oversight from the Logistics Officer, third-line independent audit, and fourth-line assurance from Navy Command Headquarters.
Where I fit in a professional services firm

Proven Business Impact
18 years delivering measurable results in high-stakes environments
A review of annual inventory demands exposed the misallocation and supported the corrective action that followed.

Target role families
Primary target: Assurance Manager, Operational Controls Manager and Supplier Assurance Manager roles in supply chain assurance and operational controls. Also open to: Consultant and Senior Consultant roles in the same domain, plus GRC consulting, internal audit, third-party risk and defence and aerospace assurance as adjacent routes. Engagement routes: Open to direct recruitment and structured military-transition programmes.
Defence Primes
Supply chain assurance, export control and trade compliance, at major defence and aerospace contractors.
Professional Services
Third-party risk, GRC consulting and internal audit, at firms with a structured route for military experience.
Banking & Financial Services
Third-party/vendor risk, internal audit and operational risk, at firms with structured veteran hiring. The core disciplines of due diligence, control testing, evidence, escalation and monitoring transfer across sectors, and each industry applies them within its own regulatory and commercial context.
A note on how these roles typically get banded: several employers in these sectors run structured veteran or military-transition hiring pathways, dedicated recruitment tracks that assess and band against equivalent experience and evidence rather than civilian job titles alone. Where that route exists, it's the realistic path to a Manager-level offer on entry. In an open-market process without that structure, Senior Consultant or an early-Manager band is the more honest starting point, with progression from there.
Problems I help solve
If your organisation is dealing with any of the following, I'd welcome a conversation about the problem and the capability required.
Control & Assurance
Operational records don't match physical reality. A supply chain account has failed a compliance review. Financial exposure from a process is unclear.
Risk & Resilience
Supplier risk sits fragmented across teams. Inventory or asset accountability is weak. A critical process depends on one experienced person.
Transformation & Visibility
Operational data isn't reaching the people making senior decisions. A transformation project needs the operational requirement defined properly before the system is built.
How this translates commercially
| Defence experience | Civilian translation |
|---|---|
| Restoring a failing account | Operational control recovery and audit remediation |
| Misallocated-expenditure investigation | Financial control and root-cause analysis |
| Asset verification and loss-case closure | Inventory governance and loss prevention |
| Inter-site stock-transfer tracking tool, taken over and rebuilt | Data quality, requirements ownership and operational systems improvement |
| Leading concurrent deployments | Team leadership and delivery under pressure |
| Supplier and third-party assurance work | Third-party risk management and supplier governance |
What I'm looking for
- Direct exposure to civilian assurance, audit or third-party risk work
- A recognised professional environment with strong stakeholder access
- A credible route to manager-level progression
- Roles that value evidence and track record over job-title pattern-matching
Staying connected before April 2028
While I am still serving, paid contract, consultancy or advisory work would require formal chain-of-command approval. I am not currently authorised to take on those engagements, but I expect to be available for formal civilian work from April 2028.
Until then, I would be very happy to have conversations about the market, share relevant experience and insight, or connect with people working in related areas. My particular interests are supply chain assurance, operational controls, third-party risk and GRC, although I am always open to hearing about adjacent opportunities.
